The whole world got a chance to see Brazil’s president Jair Bolsonaro in his element. In his first appearance at the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, the far-right leader spoke to open the debate stage of the assembly. Tradition dictates that Brazil always speaks first, giving Mr. Bolsonaro the task of making the UNGA’s inaugural speech.

It couldn’t have gone any worse.

The Brazilian president forgot about the “United” half of the UN’s name, using the world’s most influential microphone to launch attacks with shades of conspiracy teorism. Communism, other world leaders, indigenous activists, the Worker’s Party, Cuba, Fidel Castro.

Being liberal in his use of inaccuracies and bare-faced lies, as confirmed by the fact-checking agency @aosfatos, Mr. Bolsonaro also pledged to restore conservative values in Brazil. He even treaded into the realm of the supernatural, claiming that “ideology has invaded the human soul itself to expel God.” – as if his entire discourse wasn’t full of ideology.

Even US President Donald Trump’s speech was easy-going compared to Mr. Bolsonaro’s fervent statements. On the contrary, Mr. Trump took a more conciliatory tone, even addressing messages to the LGBTI community.

But not Brazil’s president. This was full-fat, unpasteurized Jair Bolsonaro. After the debates, the two leaders met briefly, and the Brazilian grabbed a word in Mr. Trump’s ear. “I love you,” said Mr. Bolsonaro. “Nice to see you again again,” replied Mr. Trump. Ouch.
